Usage From Japan, cover to Rev. Samuel Brown in New York endorsed "Per Colorado" by sender, the Colorado was a Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company steamer plying between Japan, China and San Francisco, entered the mails with pair 5c brown (#76) paying trans-Pacific rate tied by cog cancels, matching "San Francisco Cal Jun 14" postmark; the 1867 Colorado trip which left Yokohama, Japan and arrived in San Francisco on June 13, 1867 is the only trip that corresponds; at that time there was no postal agency in Shanghai so this cover's origin can be firmly attributed to Japan, Brown's wife was at the time resident in Japan; it is also interesting to note that the 5c stamps are only reported used from Yokohama (Kanagawa), minor cover wrinkles, Philatelic Foundation certificate that mentions "probably originated in the Orient," a very early usage carried on second trip of the Colorado, very fine $3,500

Usage To China, folded entire endorsed "via San Francisco" to Canton, 5c brown (#76) with grid cancel, matching "San Francisco Cal Jun 16 1864" postmark, red "Edward Vischer San Francisco" oval forwarding cachet, another entire from the correspondence is known that is dated from Valparaiso, Chile, the rate for carriage to China by private ship via San Francisco was 3c so this represents a 2c overpayment, blue "Hong Kong SP 7 64" transit backstamp and manuscript "4" (d) due, very fine and rare routing $1,250
