rate on cover addressed to Point of Rocks, Maryland, 3c rose (#65) tied by "Moorestown
NJ Jan 12" origin postmark, Dutton was the postmaster at Point of
Rocks having left his home of Waterford, Virginia at the start of the war,
he carried mail across the river, through the lines, to Waterford,
the addressees of this cover are likely the daughters of Nathan Walker who
lived in Waterford, see internet article on Dutton here,

"by flag of truce boat, Prisoner of War" dated "Richmond,
March 14th" entered the mails with 3c rose (#65) tied by geometric
cancel, matching "Old Point Comfort Va Mar 24" postmark, short
note of Clark C. Knowles commences: "Friends at home . this morning
finds me in prison," very fine

with 3c rose (#65) tied by geometric cancel, additional uncancelled stamp
at left, black "Nashville Ten Jun 28 1865" double circle
backstamp in same ink as the straight line marking, cover address changed
to Grantville, Georgia and the additional stamp may represent forwarding
postage, the Montgomery post office was not re-established until March,
1866 while the Grantville office opened again in December, 1865, partial
back flap, a very rare marking |
