1862: Thompson's Express /  Thompson's 10 cent scrip

ca. 1862 (Springfield, Massachusetts) to Harvard, Massachusetts by Thompson's Express
handstamped "Paid" indicating fees were prepaid

Thompson's Express operated primarily between the Boston area and Albany, New York via Springfield, Massachusetts which was one of their principal offices. They carried a small amount of letter mail, usually letters that accompanied goods being transported.

10c scrip signed by Thompson
dated Springfield, October 1, 1862

This 10c paper scrip, with imprinted design that matches the envelope, was used in 1862 during the severe shortage of small coins and before the widespread use of fractional currency. This example is also signed by E.H. Hubbard, the express agent in Springfield.
