1851: 6 cent rate + 1 dollar express fee / Mexico one-half real + gold dust

25 July 1851 Boston, Massachusetts to the gold mines near Stockton, California, received 13 September, prepaid 6c in Boston, carried from Stockton office to mines by Brown's Express with $1 due handstamp

The March 3, 1851 Act of Congress, effective July 1, reduced the prepaid postal rate for a single letter sent over 3,000 miles to six cents. Brown's Express served miners in the Southern mines from its Stockton office.

1841 one-half real Mexican coin minted in Mexico City

"pinch" of gold dust weighing 1.67 grams and equal in weight to U.S. $1 gold coin but somewhat less fine

The value of the Mexican one half real coin ranged from 5c to 6c in areas such as Boston at this time. Gold dust was the most frequently used method of payment in California for smaller amounts as few coins were available.
