The first stamp issued by the Confederate States was the five cent green adhesive portraying Jefferson Davis, issued in October 1861. It was issued to prepay the postal rate for a single letter sent under 500 miles. |

The shortage of small coins and paper in the Confederacy was acute from the start of the war. This note was printed on the reverse of an unissued $1 bank note of The Commercial Bank at Macon, Georgia. |
