Adhesives were
first issued in time for use on the June 30, 1855 sailing of the Cortes.
 



Penny Post Adhesives

Type A

 

#701, 5c California Penny Post adhesive (#34L4) used on cover to Bauman in Sacramento, 3c dull red with "Penny-Post San Francisco" handstamp, the only reported California Penny Post use within California with their 5c adhesive, ex Robson Lowe collection

#702, (June 30, 1855) from San Francisco to Bridgeport, Connecticut, the pencil notation at bottom left fits with the departure of the Cortes on June 30, 1855. After a crossing of Nicaragua, the cover was carried by The Star of the North from Nicaragua to New York City where it arrived and entered the mails on July 25, 1855.

#703, June 30, 1855 from San Francisco to Patchogue, Long Island, New York, This cover was received too late to make the sailing of the Cortes to Nicaragua which departed on June 30, 1855. This fact is evidenced by the "too late for Nicaragua" endorsement. It was carried by regular mail steamer Sonora, via Panama, which departed later the same day.

 

#704, (July 16, 1855) from San Francisco to Caroline Center, New York, carried on PMSS steamer J.L. Stephens departing the same day, carried from Aspinwall by USMSC steamer Empire City arriving August 11, 1855

 

#705, (August 18, 1855) from San Francisco to Massachusetts, with the same the "Via Nicaragua" imprint as previous, carried on the Vanderbilt steamer Uncle Sam that departed San Francisco on August 18, 1855. After carriage across Nicaragua, it was carried by the steamer Northern Light which arrived New York on September 8, 1855 where it entered mails with Ship cancel

#706, (August 18, 1855) from San Francisco, carried on the Vanderbilt steamer Uncle Sam that departed San Francisco on August 18, 1855. After carriage across Nicaragua, it was carried by the steamer Northern Light which arrived New York on September 8, 1855 where it entered mails with Ship cancel. US 10c stamp missing

#707, PAID 2 adhesive stamp on cover to George Williams at San Francisco, blue Wells Fargo Marysville oval handstamp,

 

RCF opinion is that it is not a genuine use

#708, (May 14, 1856,) Sacramento City use to J.R. Lewis at San Francisco, glued on "Care of the Penny Post" label at botton left and manuscript parapgh at left, this much a genuine use, also has 5c City Delivery adhesive stamp not tied

RCF opinion is that it is not a genuine use of stamp

#709, 10c City Delivery adhesive stamp tied by Penny Post  San Francisco handstamp to cover endorsed "On official business and top left, possibly addressed to Chamber of Commerce at San Francisco
