Their Importance in an Expanding Postal System
Purpose: This exhibit is a comprehensive study of the five
imperforate sumps issued between 1851 and 1856. It also shows a diverse range
of uses including how the stamps were treated by the post office, the
innovative uses patrons found for the mails and how the post office addressed
their needs in a period of profound change in the country.
